Hot off the presses: Senator Galen Hadley, who represents Nebraska’s Legislative District 37 (Kearney, Buffalo County), has introduced a bill that would revoke the state’s signature to the Midwest Intercity Passenger Rail Compact. This is in spite of the fact that Wisconsin’s recent decision to not participate in the Chicago – Minneapolis high speed rail link has freed up those monies to examine the feasibility of a Chicago – Omaha link. And further in spite of the fact that a subsection of the statute authorizing Nebraska’s participation in the Compact, put on the books in 2001, expressly states that Nebraska is not obligated to appropriate funding to any project recommended by the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Commission without a vote by the Unicameral.
The bill was just introduced in committee today (January 4th) and is available to read here. Look for more from us and others as this issue unfolds. If you’re ready to take action now, contact your State Senator and tell them that we should remain engaged in considering future options for regional travel!
