We got word from Omaha Parks and Recreation that a section of the Big Papio Trail will be closed for repair.

Recent rains have undermined a section of the Big Papio Trail under the West Dodge Expressway to the point that it is no longer safe to use.  Therefore Omaha Parks & Recreation Dept. is closing the trail from just south of the West Dodge Expressway to just north of it immediately.  Barricades went up this afternoon.  There is no date for reopening it at this time.  We need to develop a plan to reconstruct this section.  Intent is to get it done this fall if possible.  The attached map show the approximate section of the trail that has been closed.

At present, the City has not identified an appropriate detour. Member Eric Williams has suggested this untested route as a possible detour. Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments.

I hope this get this done soon, there really aren’t many good detour routes in this area, traffic is fast on the streets around the expressway and there isn’t much sidewalk access.
